The Contemporary Mood

As part of their final projects of the quarter (a partnered presentation on a full-length collection of contemporary poetry), my Reading Poetry students at DePaul are making mood boards. Here, with their permission and in order of appearance, are mood boards responding to The Book of Gods and Devils by Charles Simic: The French Exit by Elisa Gabbert: Tinderbox Lawn by Carol Guess: Howl by Allen Ginsberg: The Arkansas Testament by Derek Walcott:

The Dream Songs by John Berryman:

Nothing Happened, and Besides I Wasn’t There by Mark Wallace:

The  Lost Land by Eavan Boland:

And My Life by Lyn Hejinian:

Thanks to my students for doing such killer work, and to Elizabeth Hildreth for the mood board assignment idea in the first place.
